Alfama
Alfama Neighborhood
Alfama is one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. Birthplace of fado, its narrow tile decorated streets in labyrinth structure, alleys and pateos, are a living heritage of the city's history and people.
Located on the hill of the castle, it goes all the way down to the river. In this neighborhood, you can find many of the historical city monuments, as the Sé Cathedral, the São Vicente de Fora Monastery, Santo Estêvão Church and the National Pantheon.
You can also visit the Fado Museum, the Portuguese Decorative Arts Museum and the Foundation of Portuguese Nobel prize in Literature winner José Saramago.
Many fado houses and traditional cuisine restaurants are located in this neighborhood, which is also home to one of the most cherished celebrations in the city - The Popular Saints - every year in June.
